This book has many weaknesses, but the worst for me was an ironic, nudge-and-wink quality to the writing that I suspect was seen as clever at the time, but I found really annoying. Dragon’s Teeth (The Lanny Budd Novels) by Upton Sinclair (2 star ratings)

Jane I read Dragon’s Teeth without having read the previous books in the series and didn’t have a problem following the story. Sinclair has a superior gift in his use of facts and political and social detail and consequences to capture and sustain interest.

At times, the tone is satirical, and in a few places made me laugh out loud, mostly in the beginning. Perhaps your thoughts will travel in different directions than mine did in reading this interesting nugget, but it is bound to make you think. In the book the two groups are referred to as Pink and Red, respectively.

In Dragon’s Teeth he weaves a very engrossing tale of intrigue and suspense around the events of the Nazi’s rise to power. Characters interesting and at times maddening. Will it happen here?

As her creator, he owes her more. My problem was that it is filled with such detail and historical references of the time period that I got lost in all of the characters — real and invented — and developments.

His wife, the fabulously wealthy Irma, is his constant counterpoint–a nice woman who wants only to live with her wealth, her family, and her high-class friends.
